If you are driving from the San Francisco Bay Area toward the towering granite of Yosemite, Highway 120 is your primary artery. And right when you hit Manteca, at the intersection of Highway 120 and Jack Tone Road, you’ll find a mandatory pitstop: Ramos Country Corner. It is one of my absolutely favorite finds in California thus far.

As I mentioned in our previous road trip post, you do not buy your fruit at a supermarket when you can buy it directly from a farm stand off the highway. This stop is the perfect bridge between the city and the mountains, giving you a literal taste of California’s agricultural heartland.

A Slice of Central Valley History

Before it was packed with tourists heading up into the Sierra Nevadas, this area was purely agricultural. If you look closely at the rustic wooden walls inside the main building, you’ll spot a sign reading “Natures Country Corner est 1982.” For over four decades, this little stretch of the Central Valley has been serving up the fruits of California’s labor. It’s an authentic, old-school roadside stop—the kind of place that proudly displays a wooden “Be Nice or Go Away!” sign right next to a massive list of homemade pies. You have to respect a business with boundaries.

The Showcase Peaches

Let’s talk about the fresh produce. The peaches and plums here are legendary, and they are sold in convenient $5 fruit bowls that are perfect for passing around the car.

The peaches are so fresh and juicy that taking a bite requires a strategic lean to avoid wearing the juice on your shirt. They are the exact kind of high-energy, natural sugar snack you want before tackling a major hike in Yosemite. I’ve never had fruit this good. Please stop and give them a taste.

A Wall of Jars and Local Goods

Ramos Country Corner isn’t just about the fresh fruit, though. Step under the main roof, and you are greeted by an entire wall dedicated to jars. We’re talking every kind of pickled olive, asparagus, jam, jelly, and preserve you can imagine. Look at so much variety packed into a small space.

If you are looking to stock up on unique snacks for the Yosemite bear lockers, or just want to bring a taste of California home, the local goods tables are packed with hidden gems:

  • The Pantry Staples: They feature local honey, infused olive oils, unique syrups (like Knott’s Berry Farm Red Plum syrup), and gourmet dips.
  • The Holiday Pies: They have a dedicated freezer full of pies—everything from classic Dutch Apple to Strawberry Rhubarb and Boysenberry. They even proudly advertise that the pies last six months in your freezer, meaning you can take a slice of the summer harvest home for the winter.

The Fall Harvest Vibe

Because we were traveling during the transition into fall, the open-air tents were overflowing with harvest vibes. Bins were stacked high with every shape, size, and color of pumpkin and gourd imaginable. The displays were beautifully rustic, complete with scarecrows, wheat bundles, and “Happy Fall” signs that made the entire property feel like a seasonal festival.

If you are making the drive to Yosemite, do not just speed past Jack Tone Road. Pull over, stretch your legs, grab a $5 bowl of plums, secure a jar of local olives, and enjoy a genuine taste of the Golden State.
