As I mentioned in our San Francisco to Yosemite road trip post:

“Right as you need a break from the switchbacks, you hit Groveland. We pulled into Mountain Sage Coffee to stretch our legs and get properly caffeinated. It’s an earthy, eclectic spot (some might say a bit weird but we like weird) that perfectly matches the mountain-town vibe. I’ve got a dedicated post coming on this hidden gem in a few weeks. This place is one of my favorite finds ever.”

If you are driving Highway 120 into Yosemite, Groveland is your last major gateway town. It is a place steeped in Gold Rush history—in fact, in the 1850s, the town was originally named “Garrote” (after a local hanging tree) before the locals decided a PR rebrand to “Groveland” might be a bit more welcoming for tourists.

And right on the main drag, tucked behind a layer of native plants, is the most welcoming stop of all: Mountain Sage.

If you make it all the way to the end, you will note the white lamp, which gave me a little bit of a Narnia vibe. Definitely feels like another world.

The 1850s Roots (Literally)

Mountain Sage isn’t just a coffee shop built to capitalize on national park traffic. It is housed in the historic 1867 Laveroni House. The property has been in the owner’s family since the 1850s, when her great-grandparents arrived on a boat from Italy and decided to homestead right here in the Sierra foothills.

In 2002, the current owners (who are both biologists and ecologists) put their careers on hold to return to the old family property and create Mountain Sage. Knowing that it was built by biologists explains exactly why this place feels so deeply connected to the earth.

The “Weird But We Like Weird” Vibe

When you walk inside, you immediately understand the “eclectic” charm. The ceilings are a patchwork of rustic wood, and the hand-written chalkboard menus offer everything from traditional pour-overs to a “Dirty Sexy Chai” and lavender lattes. The wood floors creak as you enter and become overwhelmed with the smell of herbal goodness and coffee heaven.

It feels less like a commercial cafe and more like you’ve wandered into the living room of a very cool, very well-caffeinated mountain hermit.

The seating areas are a mix of vintage floral couches, leather armchairs, and antique wooden tables. There is a massive wood-burning stove right in the middle of the room, which tells you exactly how cold those Sierra mornings can get before the sun comes up.

The Unexpected Gallery

As a photographer, this was the ultimate surprise. Because the owner, Robb, is a nature photographer, one of the rooms in the historic house has been converted into a fine-art gallery. It is filled with breathtaking, large-scale prints of Yosemite and the surrounding Sierras.

When you are about to drive into the park for the first time, standing in this room and looking at what is waiting for you just up the road completely elevates the anticipation.

Coffee in the Nursery

Once you have your coffee, you don’t just sit in a parking lot. Mountain Sage doubles as a fully functioning plant nursery. You can take your drink and wander through the shaded gravel paths, walking among native Sierra plants, fruit trees, and beautifully manicured garden spaces under ornate white lamp posts. See the photos at the end for the Narnia-esq white lamp.

It is the ultimate decompression zone before you tackle the crowds of the Yosemite Valley floor. If you are making the drive, do not skip Groveland, and absolutely do not skip Mountain Sage.
