Who is Blue Couch Travels?

About Hey y’all, my name is Lance Orton and I’m the photographer and founder behind Blue Couch Studios. For years, I built digital landscapes as a .NET developer while dreaming of owning a music studio. Times change. Now I apply those creative juices to the world of photography. Whether I’m framing the ancient architecture of Rome, Italy, attempting to capture the grandeur of Yosemite National Park, or chasing the gorgeous golden hour of Siesta Key, Florida, my goal is to capture those moments in their authenticity, transporting the viewer with us along our journey.

Mission This blog serves the field journal of our lives. As I travel the globe—sometimes balancing the beautiful chaos of family with the relentless pursuit of the perfect shot—I use this space to share the stories behind the images. My hope is to bring you along our journey so you not only see but feel the spaces we encounter.

Here, you’ll find tips on how we organized trips, stories from our experiences, and the technical logistics of shooting on the road. You will enjoy a mix of visual storytelling, travel strategy, and a behind-the-scenes look at how our journey comes together.

Primer Journeys by nature are not efficient. And yet I spend so much of my day-to-day striving for efficiency. Maybe that’s why I love travel. It is a true respite from my daily routine. When I plan a trip – and I even plan free time – I like to allow of inefficiency. Road trips are perfect for this. When I see that random, interesting store, I stop to check it out.

Journeys by nature are not efficient.

That doesn’t mean we don’t have schedules to abide by. The Vatican has a timed-entry regardless of my desire to wander. But after four hours immersed in museums, Rafael Rooms, and the Sistine Chapel, I’m gonna schedule some time for wandering. My favorite trips allow for both timed events and wandering. And I’m convinced The Greatest Trip in the World for both is my San Francisco to Yosemite adventure.
